Holiday Outfit | Black Velvet Dress

holiday party outfit idea

Since the beginning of fall, I have had it in my head that I needed a velvet dress for the holidays. I have always been a fan of velvet and was so excited to see that it was going to be trendy for fall and winter. There is something about a black velvet dress and the holiday season that I can’t get enough of.

Black Velvet Dress

I think my love for black velvet dresses started when I was four and was the flower girl in my aunt and uncle’s December wedding. I wore a gorgeous black velvet dress and still remember it to this day. Fast forward nearly 26 years and I still love a black velvet dress this time of the year. I spotted this dress a few months ago and originally planned to wear it for my 30th birthday celebration. The weather was still pretty warm so I decided to hold off until the holidays.

There are so many things to love about this dress besides the gorgeous velvet: the bell sleeves, ruffle hem and of course the exposed buttons on the back. However, I was a little surprised about the length of this dress. I am wearing a medium, but probably should have sized up because it is a little short for me! I am 5’8 for reference. With the exception of the length, the dress is true to size.

I’ve been dying to wear these cute polka dot tights that I picked up a few weeks ago and knew that this velvet dress would pair perfectly with them. I have such bad luck with tights — I am constantly finding snags — so I always opt for the budget friendly tights because I know I wont’ get many wears out of them!

Have you added any velvet to your closet yet for the holidays? I would love to hear in the comments section below! I hope you all have a great weekend! Any fun plans? Ella is going to visit Santa on Saturday and then we are taking our Christmas pictures so it will be a busy day for us! Thanks so much for reading and see you back here on Monday, friends!

  1. You look absolutely stunning in this dress Rachel! Velvet is so perfect for the holiday season. I think I fell in love with velvet when I was a kid too, which would explain my fascination now.

  2. You look seriously stunning, Rachel!! This could be the most perfect holiday look. I’ve been wanting to wear a velvet dress for our Christmas party next weekend, so I am most definitely going to check this out. The fact that it’s black is so good too!! I may just have to copy this entire look, to be honest. I can’t even with those tights!! Have fun taking your pictures this weekend. We did ours last weekend, and Riley was a trooper. It’s always a little challenging with a pup! Have a great weekend! XO
