Happy Tuesday, friends! I hope everyone had a wonderful Labor Day weekend! We spent the long weekend in Ohio and had a chance to catch up with family and friends. We even got to see my two baby cousins – 6 months and 1 year – they are just the cutest 🙂 I am so confused as to what day it is, and with such a hectic weekend away from home, the order of posts will be a little different this week. So, check back Thursday for a yummy fall recipe 🙂 Also, one more disclosure. It was SO hot and sunny in Ohio this weekend. I played tennis Saturday morning at my high school courts and got a little sunburned {in case you were wondering why my arms were so red!!}

I don’t know about you, but for some reason, when September 1st rolls around, I’m automatically in fall mode. Unfortunately,  the weather tends to think differently and it’s just not realistic to wear fall clothing yet! I found this shirt the other week and I thought it would be the perfect blouse for late summer and early fall. With the darker colors and sleeveless style, it’s ideal for these warm September days. And it’s under $50 and comes in a few other styles and colors — it could easily be worn under a jacket for a more business look!

Hope you all have a great start to the short week and stop back tomorrow for an all new fall-inspired Wednesday Wishes! Thanks for dropping by!

Happy Thursday! I know just yesterday I shared some summer to fall outfit inspiration and you may be confused as to why I am wearing my favorite summer dress in today’s post. But, as I mentioned yesterday, it is SO hot here. It feels more like summer this week than it has all of summer! And since it is the last full week of summer, I had to wear my favorite summer dress one last time. You may remember a post with this dress when we were vacationing in Napa {here} and how much I love it’s versatility. It has been by far by favorite dress for the past two summers!

A great way to extend the wear of a dress or wear it in a different way is converting it to a skirt. This dress pairs perfectly with chambray and it gives you a totally different look out of the same dress! I have worn this countless of times this summer, typically with a denim jacket, so it was nice to change it up and wear it with the chambray one last time before fall.

Although this summer dress is sold out, I am still loving floral for fall! I’ve included some of my favorite floral pieces that can be added to your closet now and worn throughout autumn, including this dress that’s currently on sale!

Have a great long weekend everyone!

P.S. Don’t forget that the Nordstrom End-of-Summer Clearance Sale is currently going on. You can save up to 40% now through September 13th! Happy shopping!

Happy Wednesday, friends! Now that it is September, I guess we have to start thinking about transitioning to fall. Although, I have to confess that fall is the last thing on my mind this week since temperatures have been in the mid-90’s, making it one of the hottest weeks all summer! I am very much looking forward to the cooler temperatures to set in, especially since this would be the perfect outfit to wear for transitioning from summer to fall.

Two colors that I have been loving for fall are this military green and crimson red. What I love most about this green is that it can easily be paired with brown or black and it looks so fabulous with leopard! With the black and brown mixed, I think a neutral lip and nail polish compliment the outfit just perfectly. And how cute is this bracelet?! It’s somewhat difficult to see in the picture, but there is a monogram on the the round stone. I am always attracted to a good personalized piece and I love the modern feel to this one!

Have you thought about your go-to colors for fall yet? I would love to hear what colors you are crushing on for this new season in the comments section below.

Hope you all have a wonderful Wednesday!

the perfect cup of coffee

My morning is not complete without coffee. Actually, I don’t think I can function without coffee! And although I will not be picky when I’m in need of caffeine, there is nothing wrong with craving the perfect cup of coffee.

When it comes to making that perfect cup, there are typically three methods we chose from in our house: the coffee maker, pour over and French press. The coffee maker is almost always saved for weekdays since it’s the quickest way to get coffee in your bloodstream, while pour over and French press are saved for the weekends.

Although the pour over and French press method are the much fancier options, you can still make a great cup of coffee with a coffee maker. I think the most important step is filtered water. I’m sure my husband is laughing while reading this because I never believed him! But after tasting the non-filtered and filtered versions, you can definitely taste the difference. We use two scoops of ground coffee for 10 cups water when using the coffee machine — we like really strong coffee!

For the two fancier methods, one of the two is a much more recent obsession. French press coffee seemed like “the thing” in the boutique coffee world for the past few years. And while I do love it, a more recent obsession takes the cake when it comes to making the perfect cup of coffee. Pour over coffee has become a new trend in coffeehouses around the country and we first discovered this trend at our favorite coffee shop in Annapolis, Maryland: Ceremony Coffee Roasters. If you live or ever visit the area and love coffee, this is a must-see. And although we don’t get to Annapolis all that often, our local Whole Foods store carries a few of the blends which just feeds our addiction even more. {P.S. One of my first blog posts ever I talked about Ceremony Coffee. You can see that post here!}

With both the pour over method and French press, the boiling water is poured over the coffee grounds and either filtered through to the carafe or pressed out. For the pour over method, you are technically suppose to use a kitchen scale to weigh the coffee grounds. We just improvise 🙂

I have included detailed directions below for both methods.

Mug: Anthropologie, Holiday 2014 {black & white version here}

French Press Coffee
{what you will need: ingredients}
1/2 cup coffee grounds
4 cups cold water

{what you will need: equipment}
French press
Stovetop kettle
Long spoon

{directions}

Pour the coffee grounds into the French press. Measure the 4 cups of water a place in stovetop kettle. Heat the water to boiling and remove from the heat, allowing the boiling water to rest for at least 30 seconds. Add the water to the French press and stir the mixture vigorously. Allow the coffee to steep for about 4 minutes. Press the plunger all the way to the bottom. Serve and enjoy the coffee immediately.

Pour Over Coffee
{what you will need: ingredients}
1/4 cup coffee grounds
1 cup water

{what you will need: equipment}
Coffee filter
Dripper
Pour over kettle
Stovetop kettle

Fold the seams of the filter and place in the dripper. Place the dripper on the carafe or cup. Heat the water to boiling in the stovetop kettle. Add the coffee grounds to the filter and begin pouring the boiling water over the grounds, just enough to soak the grounds. Allow the coffee to filter before adding more water. Continue pouring the water over the grounds until you have used all the water. This process should take about 3-4 minutes. Serve and enjoy immediately.

Thanks for stopping by and Happy Tuesday!

Happy Monday! Hope you all had a wonderful weekend! Now that we are in the last official week of summer, I guess it’s time to start thinking about transitioning the wardrobe to fall {although, I do have one more warm weather look to share with you on Thursday, since it’s been 90 degrees here lately!}.

Today, it’s obviously all about the skirt. This is most definitely a skirt you want to twirl in, am I right?! An it’s safe to say I have a love for midi skirts {exhibit A, exhibit B} and as much as I love the blue and red, there is nothing like a classic black. This skirt is easily paired with chambray, which is an obvious favorite of mine, and I’m looking forward to style this skirt into the fall and winter with different blouses and sweaters. The possibilities are endless! And the best news yet…this skirt is only $20 and it also comes in royal blue and a gorgeous Kelly green!! Just be aware of the sizing chart, as this skirt does run a little small.

I’ve included some other items from SheIn that I’m loving for fall so be sure to check them out too! Hope you all have a wonderful weekend and thanks for stopping by!

Happy Friday, friends! As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, I’m starting a new {occasional} series called Friday Fashion Facts. There are so many fun trends for fall, I just can’t get enough of them and I needed an extra day to share them with all of you! Recently, I received my J.Crew Style Guide in the mail, and let me tell you, it didn’t disappoint. I have to be honest though and say that in recent years, I have been unimpressed with J.Crew’s selection. In my opinion, the styles and sizing have been off  and the quality had seemed to slip. But after browsing through this latest guide, I think they are on-point for this season! Let’s just hope the fabric is too 😉

Two of my favorite J.Crew trends for fall are capes, blazers and the like, along with detailed accessories. I’ve always been a fan of the J.Crew blazer, but the bright new colors are so vibrant and gorgeous. And how fabulous is this cape?! For me living in Virginia, I think this will be the perfect weight for a fall to late fall {and even some winter days!} jacket. It’s so chic!

There is nothing like a good accessory to make an outfit and the intricate details on these pieces are stunning! From the suede details on the clutch {you can even get it monogrammed!} to the jeweled shoes, there is so much to love in J.Crew’s accessory department.

Below, I’ve included a little outfit inspiration using some of my favorite fall J.Crew trends. I devoted an entire post to fall denim trends and I cannot believe I missed this pair! I love the high-waisted style, especially with this embroidered boyfriend shirt. The pumps are very similar to a pair that I included in a Wednesday Wishes post a few weeks ago. I love the metallic because it can easily be paired with so many fall colors. And of course I couldn’t resist a leopard bucket bag! The bucket bag has become my new favorite handbag style and I am so glad that it’s sticking around for fall. This bag is on the pricey side, but I did find one that’s under $30 here — it’s on clearance!

Wow, is this week flying by or what?! At least that means we are getting closer and closer to fall! Fall is by far my favorite season and after yesterday’s post, I’m really starting to get excited!

For those of you who follow me on Instagram (rach.mccarthy) you saw a peek of this dress a few weekends ago when I was in Chicago. I have had a serious obsession with all things denim and chambray this spring and summer, but this might be my favorite piece yet. Not only is it super easy to style, but it’s the PERFECT piece to transition into fall. And, it can easily be worn as a fall dress with layers, leggings and boots! I have a feeling it’s going to be a fun dress to style through fall and again in the spring. This dress is very similar in style to a camo version along with a metallic champagne color dress. I actually bought the gold version because I was in love with it, but I had to return it. With my fair skin and blonde hair, it completely washed me out. But, the camo version is definitely on my wish list — hopefully the green will look better on this blonde!

As fall is quickly approaching, I am excited to be adding a new occasional series to the weekly line-up! Come back tomorrow for a fun new Friday series and be sure to let me know what you think. There are so many new trends and things to love for fall, I needed an extra day to share them with you!

P.S. J.Crew is having a sale that you don’t want to miss! Use code SHOPNOW for 25% off select items through August 28th!

Thanks for stopping by and see you tomorrow!

fall denim guide

With fall just around the corner, I have had denim on my mind a lot lately. Personally, I know that I am always trying to find the “perfect” pair of jeans. I’ve only found two brands of jeans that I really like and can pretty much guarantee a fit: J.Crew and Current/Elliott. You may remember I had some luck with Old Navy’s denim in the spring, but I have noticed that quality is definitely an issue when it comes to the less expensive brands. I’m all for finding deals, but sometimes it’s better to invest in a few higher quality jeans. In my experience, they tend to fit better, last longer and look better.  Nordstrom does occasionally have some great sales on the higher-end jeans. I bought these Current/Elliott skinny jeans last year during the Anniversary Sale and I LOVE them!

There are four denim trends I am loving for fall: flare, boyfriend, distressed and skinny. I don’t know about you, but I loved rocking the flared jeans back in middle school and I’m so excited that they are making a comeback! Skinny jeans are always a favorite, but I have my eye on these distressed jeans for fall. I have one pair of distressed jeans from Old Navy that are great, but going back to the quality issue, they are starting to be a little too distressed, and not in a good way! What jeans are on your wish list for fall? I’ve included some of my favorite jeans below that you can check out.

And it wouldn’t be Wednesday Wishes without a little outfit inspiration! I’m loving this late August look that can easily be transitioned into fall. As much as I would love to break out the boots and jackets, it is way too hot in DC to think about that for at least another month!

Have a wonderful Wednesday, everyone!

angel hair caprese

Happy Tuesday! Today I am sharing a dish I made just last night for dinner —  it was simple, quick and oh so delicious! Lately, I have been having a difficult time coming up with dinner ideas. It’s such a difficult time of year, it’s still warm but I’m bored with “summer food” and it’s too hot for “fall food” — I guess it’s similar to finding clothes for this time of the year! As a side note, I am making a fall-ish pizza for dinner on Friday night, so I will keep you posted on how that goes!

For the last few months, Monday night has been designated as quick pasta night. Not only do Mondays call for quick dinners, but I’m embarrassed to say it also makes for a quick and easy clean up to get ready for the Bachelorette/Bachelor/Bachelor in Paradise. I get SO annoyed with the contestants on the show, but it’s addicting. I hate that they keep bringing people back from past seasons to keep you hooked. And, frankly, it’s so bad that it’s actually funny. Can anyone else relate?!

Anyways, no matter what your reason is for needing a quick dinner, this is a must try! It’s light enough for the summer months but by adding the balsamic glaze, it gives a different spin on one of my favorite food combinations ever!

angel-hair-caprese

Angel Hair Caprese

{what you will need}
1 pound angel hair pasta
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 pint cherry tomatoes, halved
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 bunch basil, torn or chopped
1/4 cup Parmesan cheese
Balsamic glaze for drizzling
Salt and pepper, to taste

{directions}
Cook pasta according to package instructions. Meanwhile, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the garlic and saute for about 30 seconds or until fragrant. Add the cherry tomatoes, season with salt and pepper, and cook for an additional 2 minutes, just until heated through. Remove oil and tomato mixture from the heat and toss with the cooked pasta. Mix in the basil and Parmesan cheese and stir until completely incorporated. Transfer to a serving dish or bowl and drizzle with desired amount of balsamic glaze. Serve immediately.

Thanks for stopping by and happy cooking!
