what’s in my makeup bag

makeup-bag-essentials

I’m switching things up a little for today’s Wednesday Wishes to share with you what is currently in my makeup bag. Makeup and beauty related posts seem to be popular, so I will be sharing more of these kind of posts as we head into summer. Please let me know if you have any questions! All the products that I mention in the post are also linked in the tool at the bottom of the post 🙂

best-beauty-products
You may remember from Favorite Beauty Finds of 2015 post {HERE} my love for my Clarisonic Brush with the Cashmere Cleanse Brush and Gentle Hydro Cleanser. I have super dry and sensitive skin and find this to be the best way to clean my face, morning and night. I was afraid to use it twice a day given my sensitive skin, but I find that when I only use it once a day, my skin doesn’t look nearly as clear and radiant. I’ve tried a few of the other Clarisonic brushes {THIS one most recently} but I have had the most luck with THIS brush.

You may also remember this Beautycounter Face Oil from the beauty finds post. I started using THIS face oil almost a year ago and haven’t stopped since! It takes the place of a traditional moisturizer and I honestly think it does a much better job of keeping my skin hydrated. I apply this right after washing my face in the morning, usually two drops in the winter months and one drop the rest of the year.

The last step in creating my base is this Too Face Hangover Replenishing Primer. I had been searching for a primer for quite sometime, and wasn’t really thrilled with any of the samples I had tried. Enter this coconut water, probiotic-based primer. With more of a creamy texture, instead of the gel-like primers I was use to, I was skeptical. But, I have been using this since February and I haven’t had one issue to report! I love the way this primer hydrates and smoothes your skin to prepare for your foundation!

best-foundation-products
Next up is foundation. Last May, I switch from THIS Bobbi Brown foundation to the Beautycounter foundation. {I reviewed Beautycounter and their safe skin care products last summer, read the post HERE} Currently, I am using the Tint Skin Foundation in Porcelain {I use this foundation in the winter months because it’s a little heavier, but still lightweight}. I use THIS retractable complexion brush to apply the Tint Skin Foundation. In the summer months, I like to wear the Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer in No. 1 because it’s lighter and also is SPF 20. {**Side note: usually when I use a foundation that has “SPF” it causes my skin to have a bad reaction. I have never had a reaction to the Dew Skin, which is basically a miracle!} I am almost out of the Tint Skin and will be ordering more of the Dew Skin in the next week! While we are on the Beautycounter subject, I am also a huge fan of the body lotion and hand lotion — they both have an amazing citrus smell!

Next up is concealer. I recently switch from THIS concealer {I’ve used it since high school!} to the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer in Chantilly. I really like the ease of application {it’s like lipgloss!} and it’s super blendable and buildable. I use it under my eyes and over any blemishes.

To apply the concealer, I use my latest love, the beautyblender. Honestly, I was pretty hesitant to purchase this makeup sponge. Priced at $20, I figured I could find a similar one for a cheaper price. I did buy one at Target that was under $5 {thinking a makeup sponge is a makeup sponge, right?} and wasn’t thrilled with it. I broke down and purchased this hot pink beautyblender {available in other colors, too!} and I’m so mad at myself for wasting the money at Target! It blends the concealer so well and last the entire day. To use the blender, I wet the sponge and squeeze out any excess liquid. I apply the concealer directly onto my face {you can apply the concealer or foundation directly to the sponge, too} and “bounce” the blender across my face to create a flawless finish. I use THIS to clean my beautyblender, which can also be used for your makeup brushes. And it’s great for travel 🙂

Lastly, I set my makeup with this Bobbi Brown Sheer Pressed Powder in pale yellow all over my face. I haven’t really got into the contouring {I feel like it would look like I have streaks of makeup all over my face!} so I use the NARS Blush and Bronzer Duo instead. The blush can be bought separately {HERE, color is orgasm} and is a great color for most skin tones. I use THIS brush to set the pressed powder and THIS brush for applying the blush.

best-eyebrow-products
Since my hair and eyebrows are pretty light, I swear by this eyebrow powder in the dark blonde shade {it’s under $7!}. I use about three coats and apply it directly to my eyebrows after finishing the above foundation steps. I love that it only sticks to your eyebrows and not only does it fill the eyebrows in nicely, it really makes your eyebrows pop, especially if you have lighter hair like me. Also, it lasts FOREVER! I use THIS brush to apply the powder and THIS comb/brush tool {under $3}.

best-eye-makeup-products
Finally, the last step! I will go through this section quickly since there are a lot of products and tools mentioned. I’ve also included each brush I use for application. This is my typical, everyday/workday eye makeup, that I may slightly deviate from depending on the day. It’s a super basic combination and easy to apply:

I start off with THIS long-wear cream shadow base in the BONE color and I cover my entire eyelid, all the way up to my brow bone. This is like a foundation for your eyeshadow and keeps your eyeshadow on all day! I sometimes use it alone if I’m just out running errands. I highly recommend it!

As an all-over color for my eyelid, I use THIS gold MAC eyeshadow {RETROSPECK}. It’s not super shimmery and is a great basic color. I use THIS brush to apply the all-over color on my eyelid

I use THIS grey shade {HEATHER} for the crease with THIS brush.

I use THIS eyeliner on the top and bottom lids in the espresso ink color and apply with THIS brush.

I highlight my eyebrow with THIS Bobbi Brown eyeshadow in the BONE color and use THIS brush {same as the brush for all-over color on eyelid}.

I finish my eyes with THIS no smudge, long-wear, waterproof mascara.

Whew! Sorry for the long post! There are so many details to cover when it comes to makeup! Let me know if you have any questions and thanks so much for stopping by! Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Ella’s Birthday at the Beach

morkie-at-the-beach
Happy Monday, friends! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! You may remember a few weeks ago when we celebrated Ella’s birthday, I mentioned we had a trip to the beach planned, and this was the weekend! Ella is definitely a beach girl. She was only a couple months old when we discovered her love for the sand {not the ocean, she won’t go near it!} Although, one of her favorite activities at the beach happens to be eating the sand, which never ends well, we try to keep her focused on playing in the sand, instead of eating it.

As I mentioned, we have been taking Ella to the Rehoboth Beach area of the Delaware coast for a few years now. Last year, Ella’s birthday fell on a Friday so we made a weekend out of it at the beach. The only problem is that her birthday is the end of March and it actually SNOWED that day. We said that this year, we would push it back a few weekends, because it could never snow in April. Well, it didn’t snow, but it was a pretty cold rain Saturday. We did have a few hours of sunlight on Friday afternoon when we arrived and Ella took full advantage. And not even the wind could stop her {see picture below} 🙂

It’s very rare for us to ever leave Ella to go away for a long weekend. Typically she likes to come with us! Ella is super set in her routine, so it has been difficult staying in a hotel with her in the past. But, this past weekend was a success! Even the constantly slamming of doors throughout the hotel didn’t bother her. We can blame that on exhaustion from the beach I think!

I wanted to share a few of our favorites on the Delaware coast — everything from the dog friendly hotel to the best food to a newly discovered juice bar!

dewey-beach-photography

hyatt-place-dewey-beach

Since we first starting coming for Ella’s birthday weekend, we have been staying at the pet friendly Hyatt Place Dewey Beach. It is a pretty new hotel and super clean — something that is hard to find when it comes to beach hotels. And, it’s only a block from the beach so it doesn’t get much better when it comes to location.
dogfish-head-rehoboth-beach
Dogfish Head is always a must when we head to Delaware. Although Dogfish Head is more known as a microbrewery based in Milton, Delaware, this brewpub based in Rehoboth Beach has been around for over 20 years! But, what I love most about Dogfish Head is their food! They do have a patio that is connected to the restaurant where we usually eat when Ella is with us, but it is unfortunately under construction, so we just took our lunch on Friday to go {which honestly was fine because the wind was really starting to pick up by Friday afternoon!}. I recommend the crab cakes and the fried pickle appetizer 😉

greenman-juice-bar-rehoboth-beach

smoothie-rehoboth-beach
It was rainy, cold and windy for most of the day on Saturday, but in between the rain showers we hit the beach with Ella again and found the most amazing juice bar and healthy eating restaurant in Rehoboth, GreenMan Juice Bar & Bistro. If you follow me on Snapchat {rach.mccarthy7} you may have caught my obsession with this “Healthy Elvis Smoothie”. And obsession is probably an understatement. The ingredients are listed as bananas, raspberries and organic peanut butter, which seem to be pretty healthy. Right?! In all honestly, it tasted like an unhealthy peanut butter milkshake! We actually had to stop one more time yesterday before leaving because I had to have it one more time!
lupo-italian-restaurant-rehoboth-beach
Saturday evening, we got take out {we don’t like to leave Ella in the room!} at our favorite Italian restaurant at the beach, Lupo Italian Kitchen. For an appetizer, my husband and I split the meatball flatbread — you know our love for meatball pizza — with whipped ricotta. I loved that they added the ricotta instead of the usual mozzarella cheese. I will definitely have to try the ricotta cheese next time I make meatball pizza! For dinner, I went with the Eggplant Parmesan and my husband decided on the Chicken Parmesan. The chicken was served with pasta and the eggplant was served with sautéed broccoli rabe…it was such a delicious twist on the usual eggplant and pasta combination!
dolles-rehoboth-beach

And, of course we couldn’t leave the beach without picking up a container of Dolles caramel popcorn! It’s one of my favorite sweet treats and a must if you are visiting the Delaware or Maryland coast.

Overall, it was a great weekend celebrating Ella’s fourth birthday at the beach! Looking forward to our next trip back to the beach with our little beach girl!

P.S. Here is a short video of Ella from the weekend. We like to call these her “figure eights” 😉

Have a great start to the week, friends!

Wow! Thursday already?! These weeks are just flying by! Today’s post is brought to you by some serious wind haha! In all seriousness, when we shot this look Sunday morning after church, the wind was absolutely crazy!!! It may look like a gentle breeze from these pictures, but let me tell you, we were working with some insane conditions. It’s a miracle we had anything usable, but they did turn out pretty good, all facts considered 😉 **And thank you to my fabulous mom for shooting both outfit posts this week! My husband, who usually takes my pictures, was out of town. I’m so thankful for both of them!!**

We all know my love for blush {exhibit A, exhibit B} and now that we are have reached April, {technically, I can’t say “now that the temperatures have warmed up” because I wore my PUFFY WINTER COAT to work yesterday!! Seriously??} I’m starting to incorporate brighter colors into my wardrobe. I love the mix of this super bright citron with the soft blush — it’s a fabulous juxtaposition and it matches these fun floral statement earrings perfectly!

I may have mentioned this reversible tote that I bought last year, but I haven’t actually worn it on the blog. Which is super funny because I use it all the time in “real life”. Usually, it serves as my camera/computer/chargers bag, but it’s so versatile that you can easily carry it as a handbag too. {It also comes with a wristlet attached to the inside of the bag, perfect for your phone, money, etc…} This particular blush tote is reversible to a beige, but it is also available in a few other colors too {you can shop them HERE}.

Lastly, I had to share this new lipstick with you that I picked up last week at Sephora. As much as I love my go-to lipstick/lipgloss combo that I mentioned last week, the lipstick is running low and I was looking for a replacement for summer. After trying a few neutral/beige colors, I decided on this color from YSL. Although it is a little more expensive than other lipsticks, I really love the color and it’s super glossy look and feel.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! We are heading to the beach tomorrow to celebrate Miss Ella’s birthday. As of now, the forecast is looking pretty cold, so we are hoping that will change! Follow along on Instagram {rach.mccarthy} and Snapchat {rach.mccarthy7} for more of Ella’s trip. Just wait, she is one crazy pup at the beach 🙂

Gingham

After starting the week off with stripes, {you can see Monday’s post here if you missed it!} I’ve migrated slightly to a similar pattern I’ve been loving this spring: gingham. I have always loved gingham and I’m so excited to be seeing more of it this spring. Not that it’s too surprising, but J.Crew is leading the way with the gingham print this year — I feel like when you Google gingham, J.Crew’s website should come up!

Gingham is definitely a fun print for spring and summer and I’m so glad to see it featured in more styles than the usual shirts and dresses. First, how cute is this gingham bucket bag?! It combines the three spring trends of bucket bags, tassels and gingham into one piece and I absolutely love it! And these retro, high-waisted shorts would be so cute paired with a tee for a spring to summer look.

Last, but certainly not least is this darling gingham sundress. Words cannot describe my love for this warm weather-friendly number. Not only are the colors so bright and cheerful, the midi length and pockets make this summer sundress cute and functional.

What are your feelings about the gingham trend? I would love to hear in the comments section below.

P.S. Don’t forget that the Shopbop Friends & Family Sale is going on through tomorrow night! Receive 25% off full-price and sale items with the code INTHEFAM. I’ve linked some of my favorites from the sale in the tool below. Happy Shopping!

Happy Monday, friends! Hope you all had a great weekend! Not too much to report from here — I worked on some upcoming food posts to share with you that cover everything from quick breakfast ideas to quick and simple dinners…so stay tuned! I’ve also been fighting some serious allergy issues the past few days. Let’s just say I’m ready for everything to bloom!

Today’s look is what I wore Saturday night for a casual dinner. If you haven’t noticed yet, I clearly have an obsession with stripes this spring! I picked up this high-low tee at Shop Refine, a local D.C. boutique, but I linked a similar one above. Also, I have been looking for a beige trench coat for years. I know, it sounds so crazy that I didn’t have one until now! I found this one at J.Crew when they were running their last sale and I couldn’t pass up the deal. A trench coat is always a great layering piece for spring, especially this past weekend when it was quite chilly!

Hope you all have a great start to the week and thanks for dropping by! See you tomorrow!

Happy Friday Eve, friends! These weeks are just flying by…I cannot believe tomorrow is April 1st! Well, my favorite, multi-season dress is back. You may remember it from last summer {here} and the fall {here & here} and now I’m wearing it for spring! This is probably one of my favorite dresses of all time because it can be worn almost year round and it’s SO soft and comfortable! Normally, it’s under $100, but today it’s 25% off with code SHOPNOW!!

If you follow me on Snapchat {rach.mccarthy7} you may remember last Friday when I was driving around searching for cherry blossoms. I was determined to incorporate these gorgeous trees into a post at some point this spring, but didn’t really want to drive to DC and fight the tourists. I read an article in the Washington Post that listed a few locations outside of downtown where you could find the cherry blossoms minus the crowd. Much to my surprise, I found these not even 5 minutes from our house! They are just gorgeous!

Blush and cherry blossoms just go together, right?! I couldn’t resist pairing these blush lace-up flats and blush bucket bag with this blossom-filled background. We are suppose to have some rain on Friday, but if the blooms can hold on until Saturday, I might have to do another outfit in front of them 🙂

Lastly, you may notice I wear this lipgloss a lot. Like all the time haha! But I have to tell you how much I love it! It’s a great soft pink that can be worn over more neutral lipsticks along with the pink shades too. It’s pretty much my everyday lipgloss — I actually keep one in my purse and one in my makeup collection at home!

I hope you all have a fabulous weekend! See you back here on Monday!

Happy Wednesday! Thank you so much for all the sweet comments and birthday wishes for Ella yesterday. She is one lucky girl! Today’s Wednesday Wishes combines three of my favorite trends for spring: off-the-shoulder, tassels and fringe! And as much as I love all these trends, I haven’t purchased anything off-the-shoulder or tassel related yet. I know, can you believe it?! I think it’s because there are SO many cute things to choose from, I would really like to have them all! Also on my wish list for spring: this pretty pink lipstick from MAC. Have any of you tried this color? Would love to know what you think! It’s such a fresh, girly pink that would be a great addition to the spring/summer lip color collection.

One last thing of note: did you check out this watch? I spotted it last week and at first glance, I thought it was a MICHELE! This less expensive version {it’s under $300!} comes in the gold {as shown above}, silver and a silver/rose gold. I really love it’s square shape and classic look. This is definitely getting add to my wish list!

Thanks for dropping by and have a wonderful Wednesday!

Ella’s Fourth Birthday

dog-birthday-party
Our Miss Ella turned four on Sunday and it was quite the celebration! With a flower crown, ball pit, and a birthday cake, this little lady had a dog birthday for the books. She even got to spend the weekend with her {birth} mother. More on that below 🙂

For those of you who are new around here, I would like to introduce our {now} four year old Maltese/Yorkie mix, Ella Mae! This 15 pound ball of fluff has been a part of our lives since she was a little over 2 months old and it’s been the best {almost} four years of our lives. A fun, little background story about Ella: we originally found out about Ella because my cousin and his wife have Ella’s older sister, Maui, from a previous litter. My husband and I {well, pretty much just me!} were thinking about getting a dog and when we met Maui, we loved her spunky personality and knew if there was another litter of puppies, we were definitely interested. When we found out Chloe, Ella and Maui’s mother, was having another litter, we were so excited to meet Maui’s “little” sister. We met Ella for the first time when she was just a few weeks old, and I think it was at this moment Ella had us both wrapped around her paw. As it turns out, a few years ago, my aunt and uncle adopted Chloe and she was reunited with her daughters — at least for family get-togethers 🙂 And although Chloe and Ella look a lot alike, they have completely different personalities! We often wonder if they realize they are mother and daughter…Ella does surprisingly allow Chloe to eat her food, which is extremely rare given Ella’s very possessive and territorial demeanor around food! Maybe she does know it’s her mom! Needless to say, it’s quite the family affair 🙂

There is no denying Ella is one spoiled pup. Since we don’t have kids yet, Ella is our baby, and let me tell you, she knows it too! I’m sure people think we are crazy and Ella most definitely doesn’t think she is a dog, but we are ok with it. Not only is Ella probably one of the more spoiled dogs in the world, she is the most lovable, smartest, mischievous and cutest pup around. Most people say that their dog is their best friend, but, speaking for both my husband and I, she really is. Ella goes everywhere with us and if she’s not on my lap while my husband is driving, she loves riding shotgun in her leopard safety seat. In a few weekends, we are taking her on a long weekend trip to one of her favorite places: the beach. The way in which her eyes light up when she sees sand makes all three of us so happy that we have made this an annual birthday trip. I know, so spoiled, right?!

Ella is one special and spoiled pup and we wouldn’t change it for the world. We love celebrating her birthday each year and it was so fun for her mother to be there for it this year. Who would have ever thought they would be reunited and celebrating Ella’s birthday four years later!

Happy Birthday to this sweet pup, we are so lucky that you are ours!

I just found this dress the other day and I couldn’t pass it up! It will be the perfect spring and summer dress that will be easy to dress up or even wear to work…and it’s under $60! Oh how I love pink. For as long as I can remember, it has been my color of choice, and regardless of what shade, it’s always my favorite. But, there is something about this time of year, as we have officially started spring and looking towards summer {I know, I’m getting ahead of myself!} that makes me so excited to break out the bright magenta and fuchsia pinks!

Last spring, I found these amazing pink pumps and wore them all spring and summer long. With a slightly pointed toe and not too high of a heel, they are a super comfortable heel! And I’m so excited that they are back in stock so you can still shop them! They are definitely a must for any pink lover 🙂 Speaking of a necessity for a pink lover, how cute is this hot pink clutch with the fun tassel detail {so on trend!}?! I love the geometric laser cut details on this foldover clutch, and best yet, it also comes with a chain shoulder strap — such a versatile bag!

Lastly, the showstopping Lilly Pulitzer Virginia scarf. I have always loved Lilly: the bright colors and fun prints instantly brighten your mood. I like to save my countless Lilly pieces for vacation {since most pieces don’t work for the 9-5 workday!} but this scarf is the exception. It can be worn so many different ways {ie. shawl, beach cover up, scarf} and can go with so many things in my closet. If you look closely, you will see city names and sketches of the state’s scenery. My mom gave me this scarf when I moved to Virginia after graduating college almost 6 years ago {OMG!} and I still love wearing it. It is such a special reminder that although I was born and raised in Ohio, I have a new state to call home and I couldn’t be more happy to be a Virginian!

P.S. Lilly also makes a few other cities and states that you can shop here. I have to say, Maryland’s print is just gorgeous!

I hope you all have a wonderful Easter weekend and see you back here on Monday!
