How to Transition Your Wardrobe from Summer to Fall

how to transition your wardrobe from summer to fall

I know we are still in the first part of August, but place this is the “save for later” category. Truthfully, I only started thinking about fall clothes this past week. Overall, the summer hasn’t been too hot in D.C., but this past week has been brutal. The humidity has to be between 90% and 95% with temperatures in the 90s. Needless to say I’m ready for the cooler temperatures! I was reflecting back on some of my favorite ways to start incorporating more fall-like pieces into my wardrobe by late August. From jackets and cardigans to olive green and chambray shirts, here are my tips on how to transition your wardrobe from summer to fall.

Add Chambray

Of all the tips and tricks I have used over the years, I think wearing a chambray shirt over a dress is my favorite. I love how it can totally change a look, and it works well with so many different dress styles. This dress was one of my go-to pieces last fall and winter. While it is a sleeveless dress, I wore a long sleeve tee underneath during the cooler months and styled it with the chambray shirt, too. The chambray shirt adds a more casual, summery element to the dress. And with the beige sandals and satchel bag, you can easily wear this now and into September.

Fall Colors with White Jeans

This really is the perfect mix of summer and fall! I had picked up this olive green stripe tee at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale a few years ago and I just love it with the white jeans and camel accessories. The olive green (similar tee here) is the perfect color for fall and pairing it with white jeans adds a bit of summer to the look. It’s especially fitting for mid to late August since the tee is pretty lightweight. You could also wear this tee with white shorts for warmer days.

Gingham & Faux Leather

Gingham is one of my favorite spring and summer prints. I have had this dress (similar here) for a few years and it is still one of my favorites! The gingham obsession is obviously real for me — you may remember this gingham skirt I shared a few months ago in this post. But don’t limit your gingham to just spring and summer! The great thing about this midi dress is that you can easily take it into fall with a cardigan, jacket or even a faux leather jacket like I did here. It also adds a little bit of “edge” to an otherwise preppy print.

Trendy Fall Color: Lavender

I thought it was fitting to include this particular outfit in today’s transitioning from summer to fall post. If you caught yesterday’s post (you can see that here) it was all about one of fall’s trendiest colors: lavender. When I bought this cardigan last year, I instantly loved the sleeves. I wasn’t totally convinced on the color for fall, but the color is growing on me. Especially after yesterday’s post! If you are not ready to embrace the lavender trend for fall, wear this shade while it is technically still summer.

Thanks for stopping by, friends. Have a great rest of the week and weekend!

  2. Me too, just started to think about Fall clothes. The transition is real and I think cardigans are such a lifesaver. Still over the moon for that lavender one of yours. Happy weekend!

  3. I love to change out my jewelry for a more fall vibe! Our Georgia summers are so hot, that fall clothing doesn’t work until late October/November, so darker colors in lightweight pieces, and swapping my silver jewelry for more gold (or rose) helps give me the fall boost I need. I love your olive tee with white jeans look! Now if only olive loved me… Alas!

  4. Love this post! This makes me so excited for fall!. Ugh so over this hot weather! That gingham with the leather jacket is so cute!
